William SaroyanWilliam Saroyan, (1908-1981) author and playwright was born in Fresno, Noted works include The Time of Your Life, The Human Comedy, Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze and My Name is Aram.

Arshile GorkyArshile Gorky, (Vosdanik Manoog Adoian) (1904-1948), Surrealist and Abstract Expressionist Artist, was born in Khorkom, Turkish Armenia At the age of eleven he and his family were driven by the Turks down Caucasian Armenia on a 100-mile death march where he watched his 39-year-old mother die of starvation in his arms.  Gorky emigrated to the United States in 1920 and in 1924 he set up a studio in Greenwich Village adopting the name Arshille (after Achilles) Gorky (after the writer).  His works can be seen at the Guggenheim and Whitnety Museums in New York City.
