In our home, there was a brass Chanukah lamp, a menorah. Father placed a cotton string in each compartment with oil and then lit it. My parents gave me Chanukah gelt (money). Some poor people didn't own a menorah, and so they had to make one. They took a small potato and cut off the top and bottom, which made it stand. They chiseled out a hole and placed a candle in it. People learned to manage with what was available.
