My brother Aron boarded in Podkamien, attending cheder and elementary school. He used to come for the holidays and special occasions. At his Bar Mitzvah, cake and schnapps were served at Sabbath services in our house. In the villages, that was the extent of a Bar Mitzvah celebration. After his Bar Mitzvah, Aron said his prayers daily, wearing his tefillin (phylacteries).
