The Artistic Memory of the Holocaust and Genocide was exhibited at the Katherine E. Nash Gallery, University of Minnesota fromJanuary 7-February 25, 1999. Curated by Stephen C. Feinstein, the founding director of CHGS, the exhibition was designed to link artistic visions of the Shoah with those of other forms of genocide. In many ways it can be seen as the companion exhibition or a natural progression from the earlier Feinstein curated exhibition Witness and Legacy which opend in January 1995 and traveled throughout the country until 2002. Witness and Legacy was designed as a commemorative exhibition to mark the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

A conference that brought artists and academics followed in March of 1999. A collection of essays from that conference, Absence/Presence: Critical Essays on the Artistic Memory of the Holocaust was published in 2005.

Absence/Presence contained the artistic works of the following artists. All of the pages have been updated where possible. The artist statements reflect the work in the exhibition.

Copies of the catalogue, Absence/Presence:The Artistic Memory of the Holocaust and Genocide(1999)are still available. Please contact CHGS for more information.
